Imperial Crypt
The mortal remains of Empress Elisabeth are located next to Emperor Franz Joseph in the Imperial Crypt at the Neue Markt in Vienna. Resting in a beautiful Art Nouveau coffin, many fans come to bring flowers. Her last wish – to scatter her ashes over the sea in Corfu – was not granted.
Sisi Museum and Imperial Apartments
The Sisi Museum in the Imperial Apartments of the Hofburg and Schönbrunn Palace show where and how Sisi lived at the imperial court. In the Wagenburg there is a permanent exhibition with various objects that document Elisabeth’s life.
Sisi Statue in the Volksgarten
A central monument with an integrated garden can be found somewhat hidden in the Volksgarten on the Burgtheater side. Turn left at the entrance and you will come directly to the statue. It was revealed just under 10 years after her death. The sculptors were Hans Bitterlich and Friedrich Ohman. Emperor Franz Joseph determined the location and was certainly right. Sisi hated being stared at when she was still alive, which was well done thanks to the hidden location. If you go from Heldenplatz or Ballhausplatz to the Volksgarten, you can go straight to the beautiful grounds.
Elisabeth Chapel in the Mexico Church
A noteworthy and magnificent Art Nouveau chapel dedicated to her. This beautiful chapel came about thanks to generous donations from the Red Cross, of which she was the first protector.
Sisi Chapel at Himmel (Kahlenberg)
This neo-Gothic chapel was built on the occasion of Elisabeth and Franz Joseph’s wedding on April 24, 1854. It is located in the middle of the Vienna Woods in the 19th district in Sievering. The area in the sky that is near the Gspöttgraben is named. The small chapel offers a wonderful setting for weddings.
Empress Elisabeth Rest (Kahlenberg)
The Empress Elisabeth Rest is located on Villenweg, near the viewpoint on Kahlenberg. Even Elisabeth loved the view of the city from the Kahlenberg and liked to come here. Hopefully she had her rest here. Monument at Vienna’s Westbahnhof The Westbahnhof used to be called Empress Elisabeth Westbahnhof and that’s why we also find a Sisi statue there. It’s a bit off the top floor.
There is a statue of Sisi on the north tower of St. Stephen’s Cathedral, as well as a monument in the Lainzer Tiergarten near the Hermesvilla. A Sisi figure adorns the Südtiroler Platz in Salzburg near the main train station. Many streets and squares in Vienna are named after Elisabeth, e.g. Elisabethstraße in the 1st district, or the Empress Elisabeth Hospital bears her name. Especially in Hungary you can admire many Sisi monuments, but also on Corfu, Madeira, Possenhofen, Meran, Trieste, Montreux, Geneva, Bad Kissingen to name just a few.
